There are few places more tranquil and scenic than the wide expanse of wilderness in Newfoundland and Labrador. The quiet here speaks for itself—if you’re looking for a place to abandon the ever-increasing stress and complexity of our 21st-century world, this is your ticket.
We’ve already covered the
miles of hiking trails that wind through the forests and hills of Newfoundland, and we encourage you to check out that article for yourself. Today is about letting the hours pass undisturbed as you cast a line in the slow moving Kenamu River. Here are some things you should know about fishing in Newfoundland.
The lazy waters of the Kenamu are nearly untouched by civilization and winds along the rocky outcroppings of Labrador before emptying into Lake Melville. The pristine shores and slow moving water are a fisherman’s dream, although getting there can be a challenge.
The Kenamu River is in a remote section of Newfoundland, and it’s not exactly an easy-access spot. Most people get there by boat or stay somewhere nearby like Gosling Lake Campground. The upside? It’s mostly uninhabited and wild, so you'll have the place practically to yourself.
The landscape is gorgeous, with thick forests, low hills, and wide-open spaces that stretch unbroken for miles. There’s also plenty of wildlife around, so keep your eyes open for moose, bears, and lots of birds. It really adds to the whole "off-the-grid" feel.

From the types of fish that swim the rivers to the gear you should come prepared with, here’s some basic information about what to expect when fishing in Newfoundland:
The fishing season on the Kenamu River runs from mid-June to mid-September, but the best times depend on what you’re after. Late July through August is usually when the salmon are most active. If you’re after brook trout, June and early July are prime, since they like the cooler water.
Labrador is serious about protecting its landscape and wildlife, so you’ll need to make sure you have the right licenses. Catch-and-release is encouraged for Atlantic salmon, and in some cases, required. Learn more by visiting the Newfoundland and Labrador wildlife website.
Fishing on the Kenamu River is all about getting away from the hustle and bustle and enjoying some of the best wild fishing Canada has to offer. Whether you’re chasing Atlantic salmon or massive brook trout, it’s a true adventure in one of the most untouched parts of the world.
