Things to Do in Happy Valley Goose Bay:
Scenic Hikes

The tranquil wilderness of Newfoundland is the perfect place to leave your worries behind and get lost in the great outdoors. You won’t find a better spot for scenic hikes than those just around Happy Valley-Goose Bay, and you may even stumble across a hidden waterfall or two.

But where should you start? We’ve been in the area a long time and have found a few favorites. Here are our recommendations for the best places to hit the trail and marvel at the stunning landscapes of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Peace Rock and Scenic Waterfalls Trail

Length: 1 kilometer (0.8 miles)

Difficulty: Moderate

The
Peace Rock and Scenic Waterfalls Trail is a little-known gem that offers a unique hiking experience. This trail takes you through lush forests, along babbling brooks, and by the Peace Rock—a large boulder painted with a bright peace symbol.

As you make your way through the trail, the sound of cascading water guides you to the main attraction—a serene waterfall surrounded by natural rock formations. It's the perfect spot for a photography session or to enjoy a peaceful moment in nature. Don’t forget to bring a picnic for when you arrive at the falls, where you can relax and take in the surroundings.

Birch Island Boardwalk

Length: 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) round-trip

Difficulty: Easy

The
Birch Island Boardwalk is a popular and accessible hike near Goose Bay. The trail features a well-maintained boardwalk that’s suitable for all fitness levels, including families with young children and individuals with mobility challenges.

You’ll enjoy stunning views of the Churchill River as you make your way along the boardwalk, as well as glimpses of local wildlife, such as birds and small mammals. The towering birch trees and vibrant wildflowers complete the trail's natural beauty, and picnic areas and fishing spots are available for a quick stop along the way.

Birch Brook Ski Clubs

Length: 15 kilometers (9.3 miles)

Difficulty: Varies (easy to difficult)

The
Birch Brook Ski Club features a network of trails perfect for year-round excursions. During the summer months, the trails that accommodate hundreds of skiers in the winter transform into excellent hiking paths. The trails wind through dense forests and open meadows, offering stunning vistas and abundant wildlife sightings.

Winter turns these paths back into groomed cross-country skiing routes, making the Birch Brook Ski Club a versatile destination in any season. Facilities at the trailhead include restrooms, a lodge, and picnic areas—everything you need for a full day of adventure.

Peter’s Falls Trail

Length: 6 kilometers (3.7 miles)

Difficulty: Challenging

Another lesser-known route, the
Peter’s Falls Trail is a challenging endeavor with a rewarding payoff. This trail winds uphill through dense forests and rugged terrain, leading hikers to the impressive Peter’s Falls.

The trail has some steep sections and rocky paths that require careful navigation. However, the effort is well worth it as you reach the spectacular waterfall, which cascades down a rocky cliff into a serene pool below. This trail is perfect for skilled hikers seeking a challenge and a chance to see one of the area’s most beautiful natural features.

Hiking Tips

Preparing for a hike is crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential tips:

  • Footwear: Wear comfortable and sturdy hiking boots or shoes suitable for the terrain. Waterproof footwear is recommended for the waterfall trails.
  • Bug Protection: Bring insect repellent to protect against mosquitoes and other insects, especially during the summer months.
  • Water and Snacks: Carry sufficient water and snacks, particularly for longer hikes. Staying hydrated and energized is important.
  • Navigation: Bring a map, compass, or GPS device, especially for longer or less well-marked trails. Ensure you are familiar with the trail route.
  • Weather: Check the Happy Valley Goose Bay weather forecast before heading out and be prepared for changing conditions. Dress in layers and carry rain gear if necessary.
  • Safety: Hike with a partner if possible and inform someone of your plans before setting out. Be aware of wildlife and respect their space.
  • Leave Nothing Behind: Leave the area the way you found it to help preserve the natural beauty of the area. Take all trash with you and minimize your impact on the environment.
