Discover the Labrador Military Museum

You can’t talk about Happy Valley-Goose Bay without including the Goose Bay Military Base, arguably one of the most prominent landmarks in the area. This little piece of military history was an important installation going as far back as World War II, and is still being used to train fighter pilots today.

For those visiting Happy Valley-Goose Bay, the Labrador Military Museum is the best way to experience the base and the strong military history of the area. Artifacts, Interactive exhibits, and frequent events offer an engaging experience for everyone, and we have a few tips to help you get the most out of your visit.

Goose Bay Military Base

The military base is one of the main features of Goose Bay and is still in operation today. Here’s a little info about this iconic landmark:

History

Established in 1941, the CFB was designed as a strategic airfield for flights crossing the Atlantic, and as a staging point for aircraft being ferried to Europe. After the war, Goose Bay continued to serve as an important base for NATO operations during the Cold War, where it was used for training exercises.

The most important training carried out at Goose Bay was Low-Level Flying, where pilots would practice flight patterns close to the ground. The low trees and open spaces of Labrador created an ideal environment for low-level flying, but due to
ongoing concerns from the local Innu tribe, the training was halted.

Modern Day

Today, the CFB remains an important base for the Royal Canadian Air Force. It serves as a forward operating location for the North American Aerospace Defense Command and continues to host international military training.

Talks to bring back low-level flight training
have been happening in recent years. If reinstated, the base will again provide a unique training opportunity for military pilots, as well as a fantastic spectacle for those visiting the area.
